Shed Loads #1 - Threat to New York's Water Supply

In New York city one and a half billion gallons of water are delivered daily to the eight million inhabitants. Most of the water comes from the Catskills Delaware watershed one hundred miles north-west of Manhattan in the Catskill Mountains that fringe the upper Hudson valley. But it's recently come under threat.
Suzanne Chislett reports.

Shed Loads # 2 - Raising South African River Levels

South Africa's Selati river runs from the Voltzberg mountains in the Drakensberg chain to Kruger National Park. In recent years the river level has fallen dramatically, causing concern for those who live and work along its banks. The International Institure for Environment and Development sponsored research into the causes and possible solutions to the problem, as Suzanne Chislett reports.

Shed Loads #3 - Bhopal Update

In 1984, 20-thousand people were killed when deadly gas escaped from a Union Carbide chemical plant in Bhopal, India. Two decades on the city is still a by-word for corporate negligence, but since then local authorities have cleaned up the city's environment and its watershed areas.

Shed Loads #4 - Sharing Water in Bolivia

Below the rainforest of Bolivia's Amboro National Park two communities are trying to resolve their differences over a shared water source. Farmers downstream pay compensation to villagers upstream for cutting agricultural production and taking up bee farming. But this isn't just a story about bees and water. It's about building confidence between communities traditionally distrustful of each other so that no one ends up out of pocket and the cloud forest stays intact.
Suzanne Chislett reports on how farmers and villagers are working together.

Shed Lods #5 - Strengthening Jamaica's Watersheds

Thousands of people were left homeless and agriculture, roads and water infrastructure suffered a battering when Hurricane Ivan ripped through the Caribbean island of Jamaica in September 2004.  A year later, the small island community was still feeling the after effects but with the first banana crop since Ivan wreaked havoc, there were signs that people and politicians were looking for answers which would help ensure Jamaica's watersheds are less vulnerable to natural and manmade disasters.
As Suzanne Chislett reports, creating incentives is one way.

Shed Loads #6 - Boosting Water Levels in Lombok

On the Indonesian island of Lombok, rural communities depend on local rivers for their daily water supply. But communities in the north of the island face serious problems. Water levels have dropped dramatically in recent years which locals blame on deforestation and watershed mismanagement, threatening not just their way of life but their very survival. Finding solutions is complicated but poor villagers need to be involved so they don't suffer more ill effects.
Suzanne Chislett reports.
