Far from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan, The White House has deployed 1700 US troops to fight the "war on terror" in the Horn of Africa. Based at Camp Lemonier in Djibouti, the US forces have participated in military operations against Islamists in neighboring Somalia. But in Djibouti itself, and elsewhere in the Horn of Africa, they're also engaged in humanitarian work that both ground-breaking and controversial. Nearly two years have passed since Hurricane Katrina devastated swathes of the U.S. Gulf Coast, including the vibrant city of New Orleans. Since then, some who fled the region have returned, while others have chosen to start anew elsewhere. Among those who elected not to go back is a tight-knit Vietnamese-American family that had been a fixture of the New Orleans restaurant scene. FSN's Malcolm Brown tells their story from their new hometown: Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
The small town of Beslan in southern Russia was largely unknown outside the Russian Federation until a group of armed Chechen separatists took more than 1200 children and adults hostage at a local high school in September 2004. On the third day of the standoff, chaos ensued when Russian security forces attempted to free the hostages. 334 civilians were killed, including 186 children. FSN's Moscow Correspondent Anya Ardayeva has revisited Beslan, a town forever scarred by the tragedy.

When the space shuttle Endeavor completed its 13-day mission in space, FSN reported the landing from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Concerns over a gouge in the orbiter's ceramic heat tiles caused NASA to carry out a series of inspections to ensure the damage posed no risk to the astraonauts on re-entry.
